Extraordinary skill and expertise in the care of people with aortic aneurysms at New York’s #1 heart program
What is an Aortic Dissection?
Aortic dissections are tears in the aorta that can be life-threatening and require immediate treatment. NewYork-Presbyterian provides emergency care for patients with aortic dissections. If you have a “chronic” aortic dissection, we’ll customize a follow-up plan of care to monitor your health and determine if and when you need treatment.
Endovascular Aortic Dissection Repair
Our heart and vascular surgeons are experts in endovascular stent grafting to treat thoracic and abdominal aortic dissections. A stent graft is advanced to the dissection site through a catheter inserted into the blood vessel in the groin.
Aortic Dissection Surgery
People with aortic dissections who are able to have open surgery safely can have the dissection repaired by our experienced surgeons, who are highly skilled in this procedure.
Predicting Your Need for Future Treatment
When we treat you for an aortic dissection, we not only consider what procedure needs to happen today, but what you may need in the future—with the goal of optimizing your long-term outcome. For example, 30 to 40 percent of people with an aortic dissections may need another aortic procedure in the following three to four years, and half of patients will require another one in their lifetimes. We’ll discuss your future healthcare needs with you and devise a personalized follow-up plan of care.
