When your child is diagnosed with cancer, it affects your whole family. Pediatric cancer specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children's Hospital combine expertise with compassion when caring for every patient - and his or her family - who walks through our doors.

At NewYork-Presbyterian, we provide effective treatment with the goal of returning children to lives that are as normal and productive as possible and to grow up to be healthy adults. We have special expertise in cancer treatment in children and adolescents —not only at initial diagnosis but also in children and adolescents whose disease has come back despite prior therapies. Families come to us from all over the world for our expertise.

What we treat

We have special expertise in the treatment of:

Bone cancers (osteosarcomas, Ewing sarcomas)
Brain and spinal cord tumors. Medulloblastoma, glioblastoma, and ependymoma.
Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, with a dedicated Pediatric Cutaneous Lymphoma Program.
Hodgkin lymphoma
Leukemias. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and rarer subtypes such as juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML).
Liver tumors, such as hepatoblastoma.
Lymphoproliferative disorders (such as Epstein-Barr virus-associated T-cell disorders) in organ transplant patients
Neuroblastoma, a cancer of the peripheral nervous system
Soft tissue sarcomas such as rhabdomyosarcoma, desmoplastic small round cell tumor, and other rarer pediatric sarcomas
Wilms' tumor, a type of kidney cancer in children

Tests & diagnosis

We use a range of tools to diagnose the cause of your child's symptoms. In every case, we do all we can to ensure your child is comfortable during these procedures, which may include:

Physical examination
Imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans
Tissue and/or bone marrow biopsy
Blood tests
Bone marrow analysis
Spinal tap
Tumor sequencing
Genetic testing to look for abnormalities associated with certain cancers

Our Approach to Care

Our internationally recognized pediatric hematologist-oncologists, pediatric surgeons, nurses and nurse practitioners, physician assistants, genetic specialists, pain specialists, psychologists, social workers, child life specialists, art therapists, physical/occupational therapists, psychologists/psychiatrists, and others collaborate to customize your child's care, which is delivered in a family-friendly setting. If other medical needs arise – and this is not uncommon during therapy for childhood cancers and blood disorders – our hospital has all of the pediatric specialists onsite to address those needs. We treat the whole child — mind, body, and soul — with a focus on wellness and survivorship.

Treatments we offer

Your child's treatment plan is tailor-made for him/her and includes the most advanced therapies based on the findings of the latest scientific studies.

Precision medicine. We perform genetic analysis of tumor tissue for every pediatric patient with cancer we treat. Using next-generation techniques, such as the Precision in Pediatric Sequencing (PIPseq) platform, we can study the molecules driving the growth of your child's cancer — giving us the information we need to find the best treatment.

Chemotherapy and targeted therapies. We match your child's medical treatment to the biology of his or her cancer. We are also devising novel ways of delivering anticancer medications directly to brain tumors ("convection-enhanced chemotherapy").

CAR T-cell therapy, an immunotherapy for some children with leukemia. NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital is certified to provide this "living therapy," in which a patient's T cells are removed, modified in a lab to recognize lymphoma cells, multiplied, and then returned to the patient to detect and destroy cancer cells. Cancer surgery. If your child needs surgery, it is performed by experienced pediatric surgeons who understand your child's fears and perform the operation using the least invasive approach possible.

Radiation therapy. We use radiation therapy only when necessary and apply techniques to limit radiation exposure to healthy tissues near the tumor. Our team includes radiation oncologists with advanced training in pediatric care. Radiation therapy care is offered by professionals at both Columbia and Weill Cornell Medicine.

Stem cell transplantation. The donation of healthy stem cells from a matched donor is a treatment for sickle cell disease and some blood cancers and disorders. This treatment is provided at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital.

Investigational therapies. Your child may have access to clinical trials of promising new treatments at both of our children's hospitals. NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley is one of only 21 institutions in the country, and the only one in New York, designated by the National Cancer Institute to conduct Phase I pediatric clinical trials — the earliest phase of studies for patients.

Specialized intensive care. Our hospitals have dedicated Pediatric Intensive Care Units featuring staff members with subspecialty training in pediatric critical care medicine.
