The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Pediatric Dentistry programs at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital provide care for children with genetic, developmental, and acquired disorders of the face, mouth, and jaw. Infants, children, and teenagers with craniofacial conditions benefit from our specialists' expertise in surgical treatments and reconstructive techniques. Your child's team takes a multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation to promote form and function.

Expertise in Trauma Care and Complex Conditions

We treat young patients with facial fractures and dental injuries. The experts in our Pediatric Dentistry programs routinely provide care for children with the most complex medical conditions. For example, our pediatric dentists frequently treat children with congenital heart disease, neuromuscular disorders, and suppressed immunity, as well as those undergoing cancer chemotherapy.

Comprehensive Craniofacial Centers

Both NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children's Hospital and NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children Hospital feature dedicated craniofacial surgery centers for children of all ages. We care for children with all types of craniofacial disorders, including birth defects as well as those due to injury or illness. Examples include cleft lip, cleft palate, craniosynostosis, craniofacial syndromes, Pierre Robin sequence, Treacher Collins syndrome, facial trauma, jaw disorders, hemangiomas and other vascular malformations, velopharyngeal insufficiency, positional plagiocephaly ("flat head syndrome"), and hemifacial microsomia.

The Komansky Children’s Dental Health Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell is a state-of-the-art facility designed to address the special dental needs of infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents. We provide high-quality, compassionate care in a child-friendly and safe environment. The exam rooms and colorful waiting areas are specially designed to entertain and make youngsters feel at ease during the dental visit.

Advancing the Field through Research

Our pediatric dentists and oral and maxillofacial surgery specialists are committed to improving the lives of young patients with skeletal and soft-tissue deformities of the face. For example, they're refining surgical techniques to elongate facial bones and nearby soft tissue, using this approach in newborns with Pierre Robin Sequence to lengthen the jawbone to improve the airway and feeding and to prevent the need for a tracheostomy or a prolonged stay in the intensive care unit. Our scientists are also investigating the use of stem cells to grow missing or damaged bone. We are also exploring the development of a program to treat and prevent dental disease in children with physical and mental disabilities.
