Gynecologic Cancer Treatment

We Continue To Have Office Visits And Provide Treatment For Our Cancer Patients During The COVID Emergency. Call 718-780-3022 For An Appointment.

If you've been diagnosed with a gynecologic cancer, you may be concerned about your future, how you will feel during treatment, your fertility, and your sexuality. At NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, we provide seamless, state-of-the-art care for women with gynecologic cancers—including those of the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, vagina, and vulva, as well as gestational trophoblastic disease—in a personal and compassionate environment. From diagnosis and treatment to follow-up care, we provide the full range of services for all types and stages of gynecologic cancer.

A team of gynecologic cancer specialists

Your team is very accessible and includes gynecologic oncologists who oversee your care, working with pathologists, radiologists, genetic counselors, nutritionists, oncology nurses and nurse practitioners, psychosocial support specialists, and other experts with a longstanding commitment to women's health. We get to know you and your family, your life events, and any personal or cultural preferences, and we take these into account when planning and providing your care.

Genetic counseling

If you have an increased risk of ovarian cancer because of a family history of the disease, you can consult with a genetic counselor and undergo genetic testing (for example, screening for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations or Lynch syndrome). If you have such a mutation, we'll offer you several options to greatly decrease your risk of developing ovarian and fallopian tube cancer.

Minimally invasive gynecologic cancer surgery

If you need surgery, we take a minimally invasive approach whenever possible. You may have laparoscopy, which can sometimes be performed as an outpatient procedure and which is associated with smaller incisions, less blood loss, and a shorter recovery time than open abdominal surgery. If you have endometrial or cervical cancer and you need a hysterectomy, our surgeons are exceptionally skilled at performing this operation using robotic surgery. NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist has the latest state-of-the-art robotic surgery systems.  Our surgeons are equally adept at handling more complex open operations, such as “debulking” surgery for ovarian cancer—extensive removal of tissue in the abdomen that contains ovarian cancer cells.

The latest medical treatments

We provide the newest anticancer drugs, drug combinations, and intraperitoneal chemotherapy (delivered directly into the abdomen), as well as emerging biological and genetically guided therapies and immunotherapies designed to slow, stop, or shrink your cancer. While many hospitals refer patients who need chemotherapy for gynecologic cancer to other facilities, our team gives your chemotherapy in our hospital. Studies have shown that patients do better when their gynecologic oncologist is involved in all aspects of their care.

Precision medicine

We may be able to offer you a treatment that targets the abnormal molecules driving the growth of your cancer. Precision medicine—tailoring treatment to the biology of your tumor—is a strength of NewYork-Presbyterian and enables us to offer targeted therapies for some gynecologic cancers, such as PARP inhibitors for some women with advanced ovarian cancer.

Pinpoint radiation therapy

If your cancer can be treated with radiation therapy, we offer external beam radiation therapy, in which radiation beams are finely targeted to your tumor, sparing as much nearby healthy tissue as possible. You can receive these treatments in our state-of-the-art radiation therapy center. Some women are candidates for brachytherapy (the placement of radiation-containing sources directly in or near tumors to kill cancer cells), which we also offer.

Clinical trials for gynecologic cancers

Our hospital is a site for the NRG Oncology Group, which brings together the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group, and the Gynecologic Oncology Group — each recognized internationally as a leader in cancer research. Through our relationship with Weill Cornell Medicine, we are a member of the academically prestigious Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology. You may have the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial of a promising new gynecologic cancer therapy.

Caring for all of you

We understand that a diagnosis of cancer can be challenging for you as well as your loved ones. That's why we offer a full range of psychosocial, nutritional, and other support services for women with gynecologic cancers. Your team includes doctors who are board-certified in palliative care as well, ensuring that your quality of life is the best it can be from the moment of diagnosis and throughout your treatment.

A commitment to fertility preservation

If you wish to become pregnant after your treatment is over, we have expertise in fertility-sparing surgery whenever feasible that can preserve the ability to have children without compromising cancer outcomes. We can collaborate with infertility specialists to review your fertility preservation options. Embryo freezing and egg freezing are sometimes available before you begin your cancer treatment, and in vitro fertilization afterward.

Specialists and subspecialists in every area

As a major medical center, we can address all of your healthcare needs, such as co-existing conditions like heart disease and diabetes, and connect you with the specialists you need to meet those needs.
