Pediatric Surgery

Pediatric surgeons at NewYork-Presbyterian Queen are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to perform inpatient and outpatient elective and emergency operations for children of all ages, including newborns. They are also on the surgical staff at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children's Hospital at Weill Cornell Medical Center. This means your child can receive high-quality surgical care from a world-class team of pediatric surgeons known for their exceptional skills and expertise. Our multilingual team, some of whom grew up in Queens, provides personalized, seamless care to ensure your child's experience with us is as comfortable as possible.

A Collaborative Approach

Many pediatric surgeries can be performed at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens. More complex procedures are completed by the same surgical team in Manhattan, at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children's Hospital. If your child's operation needs to be done in Manhattan, he or she can have all presurgical care and postoperative follow-up appointments at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, closer to your home. Our surgeons also communicate regularly with other pediatric specialists at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky via telehealth. This continuum of care is a hallmark of our pediatric surgical program and distinguishes us from other hospitals.

Our Surgical Procedures

At NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, our pediatric surgeons perform minimally invasive surgery whenever possible, operating through scopes and small incisions and enabling your child to recover more quickly and get back to his or her usual activities. They perform operations such as:

• Hernia repair
• Removal of benign masses
• Head and neck surgeries
• Newborn surgery, such as repair and reconstruction of bowel abnormalities (intestinal malformations)
• Fundoplication, a procedure used to treat acid reflux
• Installation of feeding tubes (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy or PEG tubes)
• Complex newborn, colorectal, neurosurgical, heart, ENT, and lung surgeries are performed at NewYork-Presbyterian Komansky Children's Hospital

Coordinated Care for Feeding Tube Patients

Children with feeding tubes need to see their care team every few weeks. We developed an integrated program where children with feeding tubes can see their surgeon, gastroenterologist, and feeding tube specialist all at the same time, in one room. This unique approach makes care convenient for you and your child and reduces the risk of complications.

Pediatric Emergency and Inpatient Care

Children who have surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens benefit from smooth coordination between pediatric surgeons and the teams in the Hospital's other pediatric units, including:

• Our 14-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), staffed by board-certified neonatologists as well as nurses, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, and other team members who provide specialized care for pre-term infants.
• A dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department, led by the largest group of physicians in Queens who are board-certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and have years of experience in pediatric emergency care.
• Our state-of-the-art Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit (PIMU), a five-bed unit which serves acutely ill children and others who need more frequent monitoring. Some children stay in the PIMU after surgery.
• The family-centered Pediatric Inpatient Unit, specially designed for children and adolescents and featuring care provided by specialized pediatric and subspecialty physicians, pediatric nurses, social workers, and other staff who work together to meet your child's physical, emotional, and social needs.
• The Theresa Lang Children’s Center, which offers comprehensive outpatient healthcare services.

At NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, our pain medicine specialists do everything they can, using the latest techniques to ease the pain and discomfort of children undergoing surgery. We provide services for inpatients and outpatients using a compassionate and holistic approach.

Families First

Our team provides family-centered care to make every child and family's visit with us as easy and as comfortable as possible. In some cases, you can accompany your child into the operating room, and stay until he or she is asleep. When the operation has been completed, we will bring you to the recovery room, so you can be with your child as he or she awakens from anesthesia.
