Cutting-edge care that is individualized, comprehensive, and compassionate from world-renowned NewYork-Presbyterian doctors
NewYork-Presbyterian is the home of two of the nation's leading cancer centers: the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center of New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center (one of only four National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer centers in New York State) and the Weill Cornell Medicine Meyer Cancer Center in partnership with NewYork-Presbyterian.
The radiation oncology teams at these two top tier cancer centers have formed a dynamic partnership to bring the highest quality, most compassionate care to patients across the age span. At the forefront of radiation oncology care, these exceptional physician-scientists are advancing the field with groundbreaking research that is unravelling the mysteries and benefits of radiation treatment for cancer at a remarkable rate, with approaches that regard the unique genetics of a patient’s tumor and spare as much nearby tissue as possible. Working with your multidisciplinary care team, we create a comprehensive plan of care that is tailored to your unique disease and genetic profile with consideration of you as a whole person – mind and body – not just your cancer.
From the very first screening through personalized treatment, clinical trials and recovery, our goal is to provide you with the safest and most effective therapy, delivered as quickly and over as few sessions as possible, to cure your cancer and maximize your quality of life.

Cutting-Edge Technologies to Treat Your Cancer
At NewYork-Presbyterian, we are continually committed to incorporating the latest evidence-based radiation treatment technologies into your care:
- Weill Cornell Medicine is the first center in the tri-state region to offer the MRI-LINAC (Magnetic Resonance Imaging Guided Linear Accelerator) which uses MRI and radiotherapy to provide more targeted radiation treatment for a variety of cancers.
- Columbia University Irving Medical Center is one of the few centers in the region to offer the Gamma Knife ICON, the most advanced generation of Gamma Knife radiosurgery that allows for the more precise and accurate treatment of brain tumors and other neurological conditions.
- For breast cancer, hypofractionated radiation therapy delivers faster, shorter courses of therapy; and prone radiation therapy reduces exposure to nearby heart and lungs.
- Intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) is used to treat a wide variety of cancers including breast and gastrointestinal cancers.
- A full range of brachytherapy and targeted radiotherapy services are available for nearly every disease site in the body, including brain, spine, pancreas, liver, skin and eyes (for ocular melanoma).
- MRI-guided external bean and brachytherapy is used to treat gynecologic and other types of cancers.
Expertise In A Full Range of Childhood and Adult Cancers
At NewYork-Presbyterian, our radiation oncologists are experienced in providing radiation therapy for children, adolescents and adults.
All of our radiation oncologists specialize in a particular disease site, such as brain, breast, colorectal, genitourinary, gynecological, head and neck, lung, prostate, and skin.
Revolutionizing Cancer Care with Translational Research: From Bench to Clinic
The world-renowned doctors and scientists at Weill Cornell Medicine and Columbia University Irving Medical Center - home of the prestigious Center for Radiological Research (CRR), our nation's largest and most experienced university-based research center for radiation biology - are propelling the radiation oncology field through focused research into the uses and biological effects of ionizing radiation. Our latest investigations include:
- FLASH radiotherapy, the fast delivery of ultra-high dose radiation a thousand times quicker than conventional radiotherapy. Columbia is one of the few centers with a machine that conducts FLASH radiotherapy.
- Radiation Therapy and Immunotherapy, an ambitious new approach to cancer treatment in which localized radiation is used to alter the targeted tumor so that it effectively vaccinates the patient, stimulating an immune attack against the treated tumor as well as any metastases. [Placeholder for Dr. Formenti’s fellowship program in radiation therapy/immunotherapy research]
- Stereotactic MR-guided online adaptive radiation therapy (SMART), to treat oligometastatic disease (disease that has spread to 1-5 sites) or unresectable primary malignancies
Access to Clinical Trials
Our radiation oncologists are among the world’s most sought after clinician-educators who conduct clinical trials to further our understanding of rapidly developing radiation technologies and treatment approaches for cancers in children and adults. Many of our physicians developed the standard of care for innovative clinical trials that explore radiation treatment in various disease sites. Learn More
